This surge is concerning, as Michigan usually records only about 50 cases annually. The source of the outbreak remains unclear, but experts suspect it's linked to produce imported from South and Central America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, or Africa. Lawrence Goodridge, a food safety professor, highlights the challenge of tracing such outbreaks due to the short shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables.
